    Hi medical,

As the mother of two teenagers and a little one, I agree with DFC....ask your teen what they want, and as long as it's reasonable, try to work along those lines. At that age they want/need their own space, and they enjoy it all the more if they have had some say in the design. Speak to him/her and see what they want...assuming their ideas won't structurally damage the home or upset anyone else in the family, I would go along with them. You can always redecorate if/when they grow out of whatever they're into at the moment.

You may get more suggestions on the In My Home board, so let me know if you would like your thread moved over there.

    Hi there.

    as one who is just decorating my own room now there are really two ways of going about it;

    1. Style
You can decorate the room thematically, depending on what your son/daughter finds cool at the moment - e.g Star Wars, Buffy, Metallica or James Bond.
You can use different colours, depending on whattheir favourites are.
You can decorate the room sensually, using different textured materials for throws, bedsheets and wllpapers, different smells (flowers, scented candles), or aurally (alarm clock, talking clendar, musical curtains (no they're not as annoying as you might think)).

    2. Functionallity
Depending on what your son/daughter will use the roo for, apart from sleeping of course, you can furnish or style the room to suit that purpose. My room is also my study/office, and in that sense I had a devil of a time trying to make the most out of the space. I'm still not fully done, and have boxes lying around everywhere. My room needs to be my bedroom, office, study and workshop for my computer building business.

I think you'l fnd that the actul decorating will be the easiest part. It's when it comes t adding/changing furniture or changing the layout of the room that the fun really starts - space will prove to be a real hassle.

If you're really ambitious, you can sit your child/teen down at the computer, load up a home design app, and have hours of fun trying out different designs, styles and layouts to see which would suit best. Put in the dimensions of the rom and get a virtual plan of how it will look from different angles, with different levels of light, etc.

    Hope this helps.

    Cheers and take care.

    Hussein.

    - Spread a pile of dirty washing on the floor including the bottom sheet off their bed.

    - Empty all the CDs from their cases and put them on every available surface.

    - Take a selection of mugs, put yoghurt in them and place them around the bed. Leave them to evolve into complex civilisations.

    - Add a precarious pile of books and some dead houseplants.

    There you go :)
The ability of skinny old ladies to carry huge loads is phenomenal. An ant can carry one hundred times its own weight, but there is no known limit to the lifting power of the average tiny eighty-year-old Spanish peasant grandmother.

if you're buying paint make sure you get it from a builders merchant rather than diy store , the well known branded paint from diy store is not of the same quality as the same branded trade tins and will cost about the same price

If there is an art college locally you could try approaching a lecturer to see if any of the students fancy a project.
My friend did this this a few years ago and got some fabulous art work painted on the walls.
The student was allowed to use the artwork as part of their coursework.
Pay 'em for materials and travel expenses....give 'em a bonus if you like the job.
It's not much of a gamble if you see some of their artwork before they start.
Some of the colleges work to design projects as well....maybe someone could design a bedroom for you.....might even build it for you

If you don't ask you don't get !!!

This is a website that'll give everyone a few ideas. These designs may be too young for your kids, but may be useful to others reading this thread. rob
