Are they based in the UK? If so that will make things easier, and you can make a complaint to Trading Standards.

How do you pay for your membership? If it's monthly, you could just give them to the end of the month to sort it, and refuse to pay anymore if it's not. Take your business elsewhere. Granted moving hosts will be somewhat damaging to your business, since you'll have to start over again in terms of getting search engine listings and you may use your domain name (depending on who actually controls it), but you have to ask yourself which is more damaging in the long term, sticking where you are or moving to somewhere decent.
Customers should - technically - be able to move hosts and keep domain names, having no impact on search engines. Contractually, this may be difficult and I would expect a US company to be totally clued up on fighting tooth and nail to keep control of domain names, even if their customer services are useless and their technical service has gone down the pan.

The difficulty comes if the web sites are using facilities provided by Mr Site and the sites have to be partially rewritten to use facilities from another hosting outfit. If I were in the position, I would get straight on with sorting out some different hosting under a temporary domain name and put up a redirect page on Mr Site while working out how to migrate fully.

I suspect something has happened along the lines of Mr Site not employing the right staff nor having quality control processes in place and having brought in someone to upgrade something who was not up to the job and who has fallen flat on his face. I would also imagine he has been allowed to leave and Mr Site have now discovered that they don't have proper backup nor any capability to roll back an upgrade. This looks like it may take a considerable time to fix.

Why when there's perfectly fine templated solutions out there? just because a web designer charges more doesn't mean they are better.

This thread is about the flaws of a templated service and how it's losing a business money!

I think the point is that the templating here seems to go with the hosting rather than with content generation. So, while you had a point suggesting using a web developer, when snakeeyes21 suggests a templated solution, I take it to mean an out of the box content generation solution.
