Sell car without vo5 to father in law...?
Hi there
Basically I have agree to sell my car to my father in law and everything was going ahead today... However it would seem I have misplaced the vo5 form.
I am just wondering if it is possible to still continue with the sale just so that we can get on with it asap, and I will obviously request for a new form straight away and give it to him etc. upon its arrival?
I have heard of people selling cars without them before, so am just wondering how it works if it does at all?
Obviously this is to my father in law so its no stranger or anything.
Cheers

Its more down to your FIL on whether he'll agree to the sale without the V5 upfront. If he does, then fine just apply for a replacment log book which you should do regardless of the sale.0

Request the new form and you will most probably get it in three or four days. (My experience of dealing with the DVLA, other experiences are available).
Surely you can wait that long?
Otherwise just get him to apply for one.0 -
I am sure he will be happy to wait as we are quite close and I don't imagine it is a big problem.
I am going to request one just now but they say it can take a few weeks I am sure so obviously dont want to have to sit and hold off that long... My own father said he was sure when he last spoke to dvla about something similair they informed him as long as you notify them of the new owner that is fine whilst you request a new vo5 form?0 -
Cars are bought and sold without logbooks (V5 as opposed to vo5 which is a shampoo ) all the time, just go to any car auction.0

haha cheers, sorry I have never sold a car myself before so don't know the dealings with them haha :P
So do we just maybe write something up to say he is the new owner and both sign it, and then send a copy to the dvla or something?0 -
Link found for lost registration certificvates on front page of DVLA site gives you this

Sell him the car then download http://www.dft.gov.uk/dvla/~/media/pdf/forms/V62.ashx, get dad to fill it and send it off.
Sell the car first as if you have lost the V5 you have to pay £25 for a replacement but if you are the new owner and the old owner didn’t give you the V5 then it’s free0 -

If you cannot find the V5, you won't be able to pass on the new keeper's slip to the new owner. This slip is needed to avoid the £25 replacement fee.0 -
