LloydsTSB Lost my cheque.. advice?

Hi there

I recently paid in a cheque from a foreign client that was made out to me in $US. I filled in the required forms and handed the cheque into my branch; however the following day I got a phone call from my branch asking me to come back in as I had not countersigned the back of the cheque. They said they would hold the cheque for me until I could come back in. I was busy with work and wasn't able to return until 6 days later - however they were unable to find the cheque. I had to leave and get back to work, eventually they phoned me 2 days later to say that they have in fact lost the cheque.

Does anyone have any advice on how I should proceed? I have let my client know about this (a major american publishing company) but am yet to hear back. It's really embarassing for me to have to go back to my client and say 'yeah, my bank have lost your cheque...'

looking forward to your responses...

Why is it embarrassing for you to contact the publishers and ask for a new cheque?
Why not get the money ''wired'' to your account and forget the paper trail??
Even if they had not lost the cheque in branch who is to say that it would not get lost when being sent to to the US for processing.
The bank should compensate you for any additional costs you have incurred now.

I work for a large organisation who deals with large amounts of money on a daily basis, wherever possible we insist on the BACs/CHAPS/wired approach to transferring of money so we dont have to rely on the postal systems in various countries and the paper trail which has let you down on this occassion.

However, for smaller businesses and clients a cheque is the only way to transfer funds and we regularly have requests for re-issues and we have also had to request re-issues, not a blush or awkward phone call in sight - its not the end of the world and although annoying its not worth the sweat.
