Hi

my car has been hit whilst parked and it has left a big dent and some paint has some off. Unfortunately it happend whilst it was parked on the street and the other driver has not left any insurance details.

Last week i made a mistake and caused another damage to car. However i have got this fixed at my garage as it was my fault.

I am in two minds where to claim on being hit by another driver or not. approx cost of repair is around £600. my excess is £150. I am 28 but have only been driving for two years. First year there were no claims and this is second year.

I need some help in deciding whether to claim or not. pls help me.

1) I am not sure if i claim how much will my future insurance will go up by. Any guesses on that?
2) A daft question but If i claim do i only lose this year's car insurance or do i also lose previous year's?
3) I have seen on comparision websites there are different types of claims. driver at fault or not with injury etc. What will my claim be considered?

Thanks a lot

xyz, what does your second question mean?

Do you mean 'how will it affect my no-claims bonus?'. Are you hoping that your no claims bonus (which would be two years when you renew if you don't make any claims) will reduce to one year, instead of back to zero? Do you have protected no claims?

With regard the first question, you could do a comparison yourself now. Put your details into a comparison website without the accident, then include the accident. I'm guessing it would still be classed as not your fault, even though you're claiming on your own insurance.

You could also phone your insurance company for advice.

You can probably work it out. What is your premium now with and without NCB etc

Also remember insurance premiums are significantly higher this year.

Marginal either way I would have thought.

But £600 sounds a lot for a dent, get quotes and buy second hand parts if required. So get the quote down or if the car is older and it's not dangerous perhaps leave it (especially if you believe things happen in threes!)

Car dealership told me they will have to replace the whole panel and hence it was approx 600.

Of course they did but who gets their car repaired at the dealer?

Just a point about insurance - a fault claim just means that the claim was made on your insurance, it doesn't mean that you were necessarily at fault but that there is no 3rd party to claim against and unless you have protected no claims discount, it will have an impact and will reduce your NCD to 0.

I dont have protected NCD. Does this mean that if i claim this year, i will also lose all previous years NCD ?

What's the logic behind it (if there is any?). I can understand losing this year's NCD but why previous years are discounted?
