Bill Confusion

Im considering switching to BG from EDF but Im trying to work out my bill, I looked at uswitch and think I will be better of switching to BG but my bill with EDF is confusing me.

Electric Bill

Monthly DD £37 - They suggest changing the DD to £47

Last Bill -£78.92
Payments -£111
Charges This Period £122.52
Total This Period -£67.40

Do I still owe them £67.40 or am I in credit, I assume credit as they want to reduce my payment but the - is confusing me.

Gas Bill Monthly DD £22 - They suggest changing the DD to £43

Last Bill -£136.47
Payments -£66
Charges This Period £176.76
Total This Period -£25.71

Monthly DD £37 - They suggest changing the DD to £27

Same question as above if I owe them £25.71 then why change my DD to £43 the worst of the winter is over so gas consumption will reduce

I got this bill today so its for the last 3 months

At the time of your last electricity bill, when it was generated and posted, you had a credit of £78.92. Since the last bill, you've paid in £111, which would leave you with a balance of £189.92. After deducting what you have used this period, £122.52, you still have a credit of £67.40 :) It's the same with the gas, they use the minus sign to signify credit.

If you're in credit they may still put your payments up, as assessments with most of the companies are done yearly. This assessment may just be a check or 'interim' assessment, which won't look at your balance at all. It's likely that your consumption was higher then last year (poor winter) and so they're increasing your payments for the next few months to ensure that overall you end up with £0 or a credit.

It might be worth giving them a call to discuss the direct debits and see how they're calculated. They should be able to explain to you why the direct debits need to rise. If they do, great, let them go up. If they don't, get it sorted :)

When using switching sites dont input the current cost of your fuel but use the useage figures (difference in meter readings) as this will ensure you are comparing like for like.

On my EDF bill credit is always stated with a CR. EG... £67.40 CR, for some reason they dont put a minus or debit in front when you owe them.

    CR stands for CRedit.

You have paid the £67.40 more than they have billed you for.

Edit: you are not changing the total amount you pay, just the split between gas & electricity. (assuming the gas DD is proposed to be reduced from £37 to £27 ... not sure what the other bit about gas refers to £22 to £43)

For the electric, where consumption is often quite steady through the year, your credit balance has reduced from £78.92 to £67.40 i.e. you've used more than you've paid for over the last 3 months. (although you are still in credit)

For gas, where you use more in winter than in summer, your credit balance has reduced from £136.47 to just £25.71 (but you hopefully won't be using much gas for the next 6 months)
