Hydro Gas and Electric "bill"

Options
Hello, I am new to this website and wanted to see if anyone had any advice for this.

My wife got a phone call today from Scottish Hydro today saying we owed £400 (We left Hydro back in december last year). We got a final bill from Hydro in Jan for £18. But now they are saying we owe £400. We dont have a problem paying what we owe but just find it strange how it came out of nowhere. Apparently we had 4 accounts set up (2 for gas, 2 for electric) and it was their fault for not merging them. They tryed to take payment over the phone but my wife refused as she wanted to talk to me first. So they took a reading and phoned her back with a bill for £330. But again she refused to pay until she had spoken to me.

I spoke to Hydro tonight on the phone about this and asked how they managed to reduce our bill. I got told that they took our last reading with reading today and worked out an average which took our bill down. I asked if they could do that from our first ever reading and work out what we owed that way but they refused.

I then asked if they could send me a statement for the full year we were with them. Showing our usage and what we paid in direct debits and this would show the final amount owed. Again Hydro refused to do this. I do not understand why they cant show me a statement showing this?

I do not think that we owe this full amount as we always kept up with our direct debits and find it strange how they cant prove this amount. As i said before i really dont have a problem paying what i owe. I do understand that if our usage is higher than our direct debit then this would put us in arrears. All i want is the information in black and white.

Has anyone had this problem before? Or got any advice what i should ask from Hydro?

I don't see why it would be a such a problem to show you this information. I would write in a letter of complaint, detailing that you'll be more than happy to pay what you owe when it is demonstrated.
