Vision Express problem

Last week my gas.perm contact lens got a chip missing from the edge I went into them and they said that they would send it back to the manufacturers and if there was a fault then they would cover the cost which was £99 for one lens. If it wasnt then I would have to pay for the lens. I said that as far as I was concerned it was a fault with the lens and I would not pay anything.
On Monday of this week I called into Vision Express and asked if the lens was back the girl had trouble finding it but eventually did. She gave me the lens I didnt pay any money so just presumed that the was a fault on there part.
Yesterday they phone me and said that the manufacturer said that it wasnt a fault on there part and they want payment for the lens.
I told them that as far as I was concerned they had given me the lens free of charge because I had told them that I would not pay for the lens as I really thought I had done nothing to cause the chip in the lens.
What should I do?

As I mentioned before, as the original lens was over 8 months old the onus was on you to prove that it is a manufacturing fault, so you'll have to get your old lens back and sort out your own independent report, but tbh I'd very much doubt you'll be able prove that you didn't accidentally damage it yourself. Just because the assistant didn't ask for payment straight away, you simply can't assume they're giving you the new lens FOC, you fully understood that the it would depend on what the manufacturer said.0 -
They are unlikely to chase you for payment - its their fault really for letting you leave without paying. However, bear in mind whoever did so is likely to get in trouble if they can't get you back in to pay.
You've got no hope regarding the lens being faulty. If it lasted 8 months it was fine - sometimes they break, its just a tiny thin plastic disc after all. Consider insurance next time. If you don't go in to pay, you won't be able to use vision express again. If you are OK with that and don't mind going elsewhere next time, you might get a few letters but I doubt its worth them taking it any further.0
