Closing a Santander account

Hi,
I have been trying to close my current acount with Santander for over 6 weeks now. Every time I go to the branch they say it is an IT problem and that it will be closed in 7 -10 days but this never happens.
What is the best way forward to get this account closed?
Regards,
Stee-T

Thanks Baldur,
The problem is that when you go in to the branch they take your card off you so I don't have the account details.
To be fair to the branch staff they have tried their best to assist me and called their helpline whilst I sat there (twice)but it always falls down when I. T. are mentioned.0 -

If you want to avoid the hassle, just withdraw all your money from the account but don't close it.

I would not recommend this ... this is how people get old accounts that have £'000s of debt on them.
Make sure that it is fully closed, otherwise a couple of pence of debit interest due to come off, or a fee for not paying money in each month, could easily spiral into a much larger debt.
If Baldur's link above doesn't help, try making it into a complaint.

Its a known issue - if they follow process account should be closed within 2 days of reporting it.There are only two things a child will share willingly - communicable diseases and their mother's real age0

Re the Santander Esaver closure issue. As many others seem to be doing I am about to close mine as the one year bonus rate has dropped.
I have withdrawn the bulk of my money but getting the outstanding interest is a problem. I can't find anywhere on the site about how to do this. I Googled about closing it down to discover this thread and others about Santander. I would say to the answer to just withdrawing the money, I did this with an ING account but if they have "good rate to new business only" deals you have to wait about six months before rejoining. I dont know what Santanders time limit is with this but this may need to be considered.
I would consider ING again as dealing with them seemed quite straight forward.
I will wait to see how long this will take.0
