Gas/Elec Costs-advice please

Sorry for this long thread, I'll be grateful to anyone who reads through it and gives me some advice though:

Just moved into new rented flat and got question about gas usage. Ive been on all the comparison sites and seems the ave usage is about 18-20000KWh a year. My gas meter reads in cubic feet and from 1st July when I moved in to 24th July, I have only used 6 cubic feet of gas. Obviously the central heating isnt on but have used it for cooking on hob (oven is electric) and for heating water for washing dishes and for showers (2 a day for 20mins or so total). Ive been trying to find info on how to convert cubic feet to KWh and this may be wrong but it seems 1 cubic foot is equivalent to 0.33 KWh! This means that in nearly a month, Ive only used about 2KWh of gas, meaning my bill is going to be a few pence-surely somethings wrong or Im not understanding it right! Any advice?
Now onto the electric, I do use fair bit, tv and computer are usually on when in the flat (tv sometimes just as background and trying to learn to turn off pc when not using) so Ive gone through about 210KWh from 1-24th July, so Im reckoning on around 250 for the month. My GF is at home during day at moment as jobhunting because of the move, but dont know how much diference that would make. Anyway I reckon to work out my yearly consumption very approx, I'll do 6mths of using 250KWh and then 6mths of using double that to cover the winter months, that makes total of 4500KWh a year, does that sound reasonable to anyone or am I over/under approximating?
Need to switch suppliers really aswell, on BGas for Gas and Powergen for Elec, was going to go for EDF until the rise announcement, thinking of EBICO now but just not sure!
Thanks for reading, any advice appreciated!

If you have a cubic ft meter 1 unit = 100cu ft = approx 32 kWh. Thats solved that problem?
  • Thanks Cardew, feel quite stupid now!
That definitely makes more sense, so Im on target to use 8units in a month so thats 800cuft or 256KWh, making about £8.81 a mth with BGas (3.441p per Kwh for 1st 1143 a qtr). Still seems bit low (ive set my DD with them at £25 mth) but if is right and carries on I should have enough credit with them to pay for heating in winter, which means my budget of £25 mth for gas might just work out yet!!
Just got my budget of £25 mth for elec to worry about now!

Re gas its impossible to estimate annual consumption from summer use as central heating is the real killer. Depends on how big, how well insulated and how warm you keep the flat , as well as how long each day you spend in the flat that will determine costs. Until you have spent a winter in the flat you will not know your costs.

With electricity I would not think that your consumption would anything like double in the winter. Your lights will be on much longer etc but not a great deal else increases; perhaps 50% more. Your £25 a month might be just a little low - but not by too much.
