Temporary safe place for large amount of money

We will shortly be selling our home and moving in to rented accomodation for a few months. Is there a safe place to bank a large amount of money, apart from the usual £50,000 per institution rule. With Northern Rock now not offering total security unsure what to do.

Is the amount *so* large that it isn't reasonable to split it into several lots of £50k, and then arrange that you have no more than £50k per banking license?0
