Joint Bank Account problems RBS

Hi

My wife had a joint account with her ex partner. The account was amassing charges beyond belief. She called RBS to resolve and even offered to pay her half of the charges. They refused this offer as they claim to accept a payment she must admit liability for the whole balance, which she is not going to do.
All we are doing is going round in circles. Only today Wescot have contacted her regarding this balance. Should RBS have supplied her with DOA to Wescot or their intentions. Wescot state that they searched her credit record to get the address, are they allowed to do this unauthorised?

If they looked in her credit record they would have found the linked name being her ex partner.
Why is she being hounded by these people when she made the offer to settle half the bill, but to RBS that was not good enough.

Doesnt joint responsibility come with a joint account?

Any views or advice is greatly appreciated.

Unfortunately a joint account imples FULL responsibility for each partner, not 50%.

RBS have done nothing wrong - any other bank would have done the same.

Sorry - not sure what to advise

Yes I get that bit but they have never contacted her ex partner regarding this. Thats not equality despite my wife supplying the address to them too.

    hi
How do you know they havent contacted her ex? if they have his address i would have thought they would have tried to contacted him however whether he wants to get in touch with them once he has recieved a letter from them another matter

like has already been said a joint account doesnt mean you only take part responsibility and most companies will go after whoever will contact them.
Unfortunately they dont care about whos spent on the account, whos caused charges etc they just want their money

Joint accounts have joint and several liability.

This basically means that RBS / Debt collector can go after any party for the whole amount. They will generally target the person/people who are most likely to pay up.

Unfortunately, since your wife didn't take her name off the account or ask for it to be frozen/disputed, then she will be equally liable for all transactions.

Don't know amounts sometimes worth paying up all just to lose link, all this time there is still a tie to the ex.
