EON bill fiasco help needed.

Hi,

I just found out today that EON have been reading my neighbours meter and charging me for there electric. I live in a block of flats, 6 flats to each block, two flats per floor. This has been happening since I moved in at the end of Jan 08 (OK I should have checked my readings) They apologised on the phone and said they would sort it out. They have just got back to me via email with the readings that I should have been charged for or so I thought. They have given me an estimated opening reading for when I moved in and the closing read which I gave them today. The guy on the phone told me that my final bill has been reduced from £261 to £140, a reduction of £120. Apparently the £120 makes up the total of what I have overpaid since moving in. Without the actual meter readings I am unable to compare against what I was actually billed and to be honest I am not filled with to much confidence about there ability to provide acurate billing details. I am just wondering if anyone else has had this problem and how they dealt with it? My neighbour changed supplier from EON to EDF so would I need to contact them to get all the meter readings?

Im a little confused!!

Sorry Bumear, I posted a reply to your comments on the thread started by Lyra 711 yesterday which must have crossed over with this new thread.

As I said on the earlier thread, this is not an uncommon problem with new builds and we have a specialist crossed meter team to sort these things out. Give them a call if you are unhappy with the proposed resolution.

They will be able to explain how they have arrived at the meter readings used to re-bill your account.

It may be we have some readings for the time we supplied you, possibly from a meter reader as we certainly should have attempted to read the meter since you took over responsibility in Jan 08. Is the meter outside and accessible? However, I am speculating.

Hope this helps point you in the right direction, Bumear. Give me a shout if I can help further as will be happy to do so.

    Hi Malc,

    Thankyou for replying

The problem I face is that my neighbour has switched supplier to EDF. EDF have sent meter readings to the cross meters team who have worked out an estimated opening read (the date I moved in) and re billed my account using this estimate and the figure I gave them today. Im worried that without the actual meter readings for each bill to compare against each bill I have paid, I will have lost a bit of money (Hope this makes sense) I have all my previous bills with the useage breakdown and just want the same to compare against what I should have paid. The cross meter team assure me that the estimate is correct but, as you could understand, I am a little bit suspicious to say the least.

    Hi Bumear

Thoroughly understand your reluctance to accept the estimated start reading. However, in the absence of an actual meter reading for the day you moved in, we have little option but to estimate.

Also, totally agree that the re-bill needs to break down the charges to cover the separate quarterly periods during the time we supplied you. There is no way you should be paying for electricity used in 2008 at today's prices. Has this been done? Have we used all the readings EDF have given us to re-bill the account?

To help settle your mind a little, I would suggest keeping a record of your readings going forward. This will give you a handle on your current usage.

See if this is similar to the usage we have charged. Provided there have been no major changes between then and now, it may help give you a semblance of re-assurance if the current usage mirrors that we have billed.

Sorry I can't be more specific, Bumear. Crossed meters generally have to rely on estimates. Hopefully, we have been as accurate as possible.

I have looked at the new bill online in detail and it sort of makes sense. They seem to have charged me at the rates applicable at the time of useage which is good news. It also seems that the useage amounts are all estimated on the new bill when I thought that EDF were giving them the actual useage amounts. What are the chances of me getting the actual amounts from EDF myself I wonder?

    Hi Bumear

Definitely agree, it's good we have charged at the rates applicable when the electricity was used. This is the right thing to do. As I said previously, there is no way you should be paying for electricity used in 2008 at today's prices.

Not sure how EDF will respond to your request. I would have a word and see what they say.

Might also be worth having another chat with us. Ask if there are any meter readings noted anywhere on your account for the correct meter. Readings are electronically sent between meter readers and suppliers but, for various reasons, are not always used for billing.

No harm in double checking. If there are any, see how they fit in with the estimates used.

Hi Bumear - From your post it seems that the meter mix-up was a simple 2 way cross between you and one other neighbor Could have been worse with every flat in the block involved.

So it appears that you have paid a series bills for power used by your neighbor, and they have paid for your power on bills addressed to them.
To get your hands on bills that reflect your own Start reading and use, why not ask the nieghbor for copies of thier bills and offer them copies of yours so they can do the same?

I hope it was. I have put a little note in the post boxes of my block explaining what has happened and for them to check there meters. I did think of asking the neighbour but there was no answer when I knocked. Plus I think there have been three different occupants of the flat since I moved in.
The plu side is I should get £100 back and Im now a whizz at reading electric meters and understanding them!
