Refurbished Freeview box died early :(

On 18th May 2009 I bought a refurbished Freeview/DVD-recorder box from Boffer.co.uk for a reasonable price of around £50. It was advertised with a three-month warranty.
Nine months later (i.e. at the end of February), the unit has broken mysteriously and I can only watch blue-squiggles (albeit with sound). I've meticulously changed cables and tried the box with different aerials and televisions, but to no avail; the fault is definitely with the box.
I've spoken to the people at Boffer about the fault and they maintain that, because it was out of the advertised three-month warranty, they are unable to do anything about it. With me not knowing an awful lot about consumer law, especially with second-hand goods like this, is there anyone who can offer any advice - even if that advice is the disappointing "you've no leg to stand on; buy a new unit".
£50 for any product that lasts less than a year is a bit much for a miser like me; more so, because I'd recorded A Muppet's Christmas Carol on that box and now I can't watch it.
Any help, muchos appreciatos.
