too early to scarify and seed lawn?

Is it too early to scarify my lawn and reseed it? we are still having a few frosty nights but I'm having a garden party in June and want to get started making the lawn look nice.

Mine is a disaster. Heaps of moss, huge bare patches and worm casts gallore. It is too wet to mow but I really need to make a start on getting it back on track.

I'd like a new mower - any suggestions - we have petrol at the moment which is 15 years old and too heavy. I don't want an electric cable, it would get cut!

I wonder if scarifying is what my dad is telling me to do to our lawn. When we moved in last year, it was completely overgrown and absolutely horrid. We cut it all back to find lots of bald patches and thistles. It's sat like that ever since due to the frost and bad weather but now I reckon I'm ready to tackle it.

My dad says I should kill the whole thing off with weedkiller (there's very little grass there and certainly not enough to bother mowing, it's mostly tough thistles and other weeds), turn the soil over and sow new grass seed. Does this sound right?

There were loads of weeds on our (small) lawn when we moved in last January, no thistles though. I, like your dad suggested, killed the whole thing with weed killer and sowed it again. Its looking a lot better now with hardly any weeds.

I scarified part of mine with a rake a week ago but there's still lots of moss. It's hard work on the arms and shoulders so I'm having to do a little at a time, I've just left the moss loose in a pile on the vegetable patch at the moment for the birds to come and take it for their nest making over the next few weeks. While we still having frosty nights I think it's better not to reseed it yet. I'd wait until mid April when the ground is starting to warm up. The seed will germinate more quickly then and you'll probably get a better result.

I put down grass seed a month ago that hasn't done anything yet.

But the day the weather becomes suitable, it'll be there already :)
