Toyota Yaris Brake Discs

I have a 2007 Yaris that has done 17,000 miles. Around 14 months ago the brakes started grinding, as though the pads needed replacing. I took it to a local (non-toyota) garage who advised me that the pads had lots of life left in them yet. The grinding continued and I have had it back at the garage several times, who about a month changed the pads even though they didn't need replacing because they could not work out what was causing the grinding noise. I took it to Toyota earlier this week as it had been recalled for the accelerator pedal, so I asked them to look at the brakes. They have said I need new discs as they are lipped and worn. Firstly is this correct, as I do not see how discs can be worn after 17,000 miles and when I have never let the pads wear down? Also, if I do need new discs, is this covered under the warranty because I really do not expect to be replacing discs at such a low mileage?

Consumables aren't covered unless they are faulty...

Would you think they are faulty, or is it normal wear and tear for discs to need replacing after 17,000 miles (well probably 11,000 miles when the problem first started)?

is the grinding noise there all the time or only when you brake??

is a wear and tear item can wear quickly if mostly stop start town driving

the garage could try sanding the pad surface could be glazed (but thet wont as they want to sell you discs)

It only makes the noise at the end of braking when I come to a complete stop. Don't think it's anything to do with the pads as it is happening with both the Toyota pads and the non Toyota pads I replaced them with around three weeks ago.

be a build up of rust on the edge of the disc then
could try skimming them but really may as well replace them

discs wear down quicker these days due to harder compound of friction material used in brake pads without asbestos.

Discs are made from cast iron which rust quite rapidly. Lots of miles and reasonably hard braking wear the rust away.

If you are doing less than 9000 miles a year, the rust is probably building up around the perimeter of the disc which is making a scraping noise when you brake.

If you go on a 20 mile (-ish) trip now and then and do some spirited braking, this will clear the rust and fix your problem.

Not much chance of getting anything from the warranty now I suspect if you have used pattern parts.

Your mileage is way too low to get optimum wear from brake pads. Also try some hard braking a couple of times a week to try and get rid of excess rust as mentioned above.
