Faulty TV from Comet, out of 12 month warranty

I have a 37" Toshiba LCD I bought about 14 months ago. It's started doing this strange thing where sometimes when turning it on it'll flicker briefly and then the screen will go blank. The green light is still on though and sound still comes through.

If I unplug it for a few hours and turn it on again it works fine but the next day it always goes back to not working for a while.

I've phoned Comet and because I'm out of the 12 months warranty they're sending an engineer next week which they claim is free of charge (it says on their website an engineer visit is £27 so I'm sceptical).

Has anyone had dealings with Comet in this sort of situation? Am I likely to have to pay a massive repair bill?

If they're offering a free engineer, it might be an idea to get it in writing rather than just taking it on advice over the phone, since if they do turn around and try to charge you it'll be difficult to prove otherwise just going off a phone call.

Anyway, you might have a case for claiming the cost of the repair or a replacement under the Sales of Goods Act, however, because more than six months have passed since purchase, it is up to you to prove that the fault is inherent and not due to any misuse.

    Hi Duckula

My name's Phil and I'm from Comet.

I was sorry to note the problems that you are experiencing with your television.

Firstly, I would recommend checking that the issue you describe is not being caused by any of your external inputs, such as a digital receiver or DVD Recorder etc.

Our out of guarantee inspection charges for televisions are currently £27, however, as you have been advised that the initial inspection will be free of charge, I will ensure that this is honoured. I will require your purchase details to enable me to look into this further for you though, therefore please could you send me an e-mail via the link below with this information:-

    https://comet.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/comet.cfg/php/enduser/std_alp.php

You will need to register a few details with us to be able to send your e-mail in.

In regards to the cost of the repair, any charges will be calculated based on the age of the television and the nature of the fault. You will be advised of these before any work is carried out and you would not be under any obligation to have us complete any repair.

    Thanks
    Phil
