I was in Dubai this time last year and yes the alcohol is expensive in restaurants, you also require a special license to buy alcohol in supermarkets etc. Drinking alcohol and getting drunk are frowned upon in the UAE.

We went to Dubai 2 years ago and found alcohol to be about the same price as over here.

It depends on where you go, but in all the pubs, clubs and restaurants we went to no-one batted an eyelid at the amount we were drinking (which I admit was quite a lot ;) )

Can't comment on buying it in supermarkets though as we didn't try.

You cant buy alcohol anywhere in the uae apart from licenced bars and restaurants, and in dubai airport duty free, i think that you are allowed to buy something like 3 bottles on entry, have a good time.

No point going really then is there if you can't buy a bottle of wine in a supermarket to have on your hotel balcony like you can in Europe.

Thanks eveyone for the info. If we buy drinks in Dubai airport is there an allowance which you must adhere to we will be staying in a complex about an hour from Dubai City and will have to pauy hotel prices as I dont think there is much competition arround

Your allowance is 4 litres and it makes no difference on the strength of alcohol, so it doesnt matter if you take in 4 litres of lager or 4 of vodka. This is per person.
