does anyone out there have any idea what could be the problem?

i have a toshiba laptop with a mat!!!!a dvd burner drive and it was working fine until about 2 weeks ago.
at first it just wouldnt burn dvd's, then i found that the heat could be causing the problem so when i burn dvd's with a fan blasting on the laptop it seems to burn - only problem is my laptop decided to suddenly stop playing dvd's.

i burnt a dvd saturday which played fine on my laptop. sunday i tried it again and it still worked, but another one i burnt later on saturday would not.
later that day none would work.

a while back interwindvd just stopped playing dvd's so i would use media player, now this jsut says there is no disc in the drive.
basically, one by one every program i had that used to play copied and pre-recorded dvd's has stopped working.

i thought it was the drive but it works fine for cd's and still picks up that there is a dvd in the drive, only nothing will run it.
BUT the dvd's work fine in other players!

i'm sure its some driver or software issue but i cant figure out what
