Making money writing

Options
I just got cut off and can't find the post I was reading. However, people were talking about making money writing articles, etc. Does anyone have any advice on where you would begin?

Thanks

    Hey,

I'm not sure what thread you were originally reading but I make a bit of extra cash writing for a company called Prospect Solution. I earn between £20 - £30 per 500 words. You have to work to pretty tight deadlines and be available to do amendments but if you have an area of expertise then it's pretty reasonable for doing research and writing from home.

    Hope that's helpful

I've never heard of Prospect Solutions before so I just did a quick Google...Looks okay but I'm still very wary; does anyone else have any experience of them? Ihd2707 - could you tell us a bit more about how you get assignments from them? It doesn't sound like a bidding site, like Freelancer, so it seems a bit too good to be true to me (I'm a glass half empty kind of girl!).
    Thanks.

  • I checked them out but it requires education to a degree level, which I don't have. Any ideas if they check up on this or can I blag it?

Good topic. I am trying to break into the fitness/weight loss/nutrition writing industry.

Not only for a bit of extra cash, but also to help stop all this nonsense that is printed in many a glossy magazine etc which really does my industry a disservice.

Will hopefully be getting stuff published in ‘industry related’ magazines/journals this year, and be presenting at a national conference next year though!

But any ideas on how or where (such as Prospect Solutions for Exercise Physiologists!)...

This is rather an uninformed suggestion, but I was considering getting into writing and someone told me to check out www.suite101.com. I never actually did anything more than look at their home page because some other stuff came up, but I'm led to believe they pay people to write articles for an online magazine.

    Heya,

Sorry it's taken me a while to reply.

The way I get assignments is, they have a list of all of my areas of expertise (not that there's many lol) and every time they get something come in for that area they email me the details of the assignment including the rate of pay. (For me, they are between £20-£30 per 500 words.) If I'm interested in doing that assignment I log into my account and click on 'bid' which basically just means you are willing to do it. They then, I imagine, look through the interested people then pick the best qualified person. Over the last couple of weeks I've done 2. 1 - £130 for 3750 words and 2 - £60 for 1500 words. It's not a perfect company, the couple of times I've talked to them on the phone was a bit odd but they're good at communicating by email so I tend to just stick with that.

Wishfairy - I don't think you would be able to blag it. When I joined they wanted photocopies of my degree certificates as well as a sample of an essay that I've done.

Burnsie - I think they would have work for you as they seem to cover loads of areas. Can't be 100% sure as my area is law but worth a go.

I hope that helps. Feel free to ask any other questions. Just thought, seeing as I've made a bit of cash from doing it (writing from the comfort of my house) others might want to know about them.

    :-)

I've never found a site that pays anything worthwhile, but if you know any please mention!

It's a hard field to break into properly, but is worth it. However - I'd steer clear of the 'write internet articles' sites as they pay peanuts and are avoided by the pros.

If you seriously want to be a writer - study. Work hard. There's no short-cuts.

I work now and then as a freelance copywriter and my going rate is £275 per day (and I'm fairly cheap for a pro). But it took over 10 years experience and a great portfolio of published work to get there.
Cash not ash from January 2nd 2011: £2565.:j

OU student: A103 , A215 , A316 all done. Currently A230 all leading to an English Literature degree.

Any advice given is as an individual, not as a representative of my firm.
  • I registered with Academic Knowledge, which sounds very similar set up to Prospect Solutions. But I gave up reading the emails they sent me with details of assignments I could bid on because they kept sending me stuff which was nothing to do with my area of Expertise. I registered as an English Language graduate but I kept getting things for geography, history and psychology. I wouldn't even know where to start. Annoyed me in the end.

I once tired to register with suite101 but got rejected. Keep meaning to try again with different writing examples.
