Are you aware that Microsoft stopped making security patches for Office 2000 from August last year? You are not protected against any vulnerabilities that have been discovered since then.

Does Outlook work as this uses word for the email text?

I had to uninstall Office 2007 as Office 2010 conflicts with it and cannot get Office 2007 to work properly now so may be that Office 2007 is conflicting with Office 2000.

Have you tried doing a custom install or installing from your original pc via wired/wireless connection if you can do this?

Well an update on my last update. More for the purposes of accuracy in case anyone else comes along for advice. Regarding the idea of puting the /a parameter on a shortcut. I'm afraid I was so confident that it would work that I posted before doing it. Stupid I know. I couldn't get it to accept the parameter at all. It works from the "run" command line but not from a short cut. Or at least not for me. The advice I believe is sound, but needs some clever guy to sort out how. However even if it works you can't go into a pre-existing word document and open it.
So one way or another a mess !
But...... I got hold of another, free, version of Office 2000. I installed from scratch AND got rid of the lurking Office 2007 on the machine and it all works great. I'm therefore none the wiser what caused it and no new viewer to this thread is going to learn anything either. I've got a solution but haven't helped society !
