I bought a fantastic leather sofa in January, thinking at the time, this is the most comfortable sofa in the world.
When it arrived within an hour i noticed a small nick in the leather, its tiny but you can fit the corner of your nail into it. I phoned to let them know and they sent out a technician (very intimidating looking & patronising) he told me it was easily repaired as it was just a bit of grit that had got stuck during the tanning process and then fallen off leaving a mark.
I asked him why you could insert the corner of your nail right into the leather if that was the case, this is when he got really patronising as if i was being stupid and repeated what he had already said.
I said a repair was not acceptable as a nick in leather no matter how tiny will be a weak spot that over time will increase in size as its on an area your bum would be.
He sighed and went on to repeat the same story, i asked him to leave. He said he would submit his report to head office.
I left messages continually at head office and was never called back so i phoned the shop i bought it from and give them their due they managed to get someone from head office phone me back.
The offer was a repair or my money back, i said i'd like an exchange please, i'm more than happy with the style of the sofa, they said they would not do that. By this time its now Febuary so if i took my money back i would not get the same sofa at the same January sale price.
I ask if i accept a repair what guarantee will i have that it will last, they say a year. I say its already guaranteed a year.
I then ask if i keep the sofa what compensation will i receive as the goods are flawed.
After having to wait another few weeks and note we are now in March, purchase was back in January, they have just called to say they will award £30 compensation on an £850 sofa.
I have said i'm shocked and need to discuss this with my husband. What is everyone's thoughts on this?

My thoughts are the law is on their side. You have no right to insist on a replacement and they are doing everything they are required to do by offering a repair OR refund under the sale of goods act 1979.
Take one before they take back their offer and your left with a repair you dont want or a refund you dont want (sods law says they will only give you the option you dont want).
On a side note, compensation isnt actually a form of redress under the SOGA so this is also a good will offer (despite it being low) so just be mindful that you are asking for something they dont have to give under any circumstance.Back by no demand whatsoever.0 -
If they've offered a refund I'd grab it quickly because from my experience with Harveys I've found it impossible to get them to offer a refund for faulty goods. It's the best offer you'll get in my opinion.0

Take the refund. I'm sure if you look around you'll be able to find an equivalent sofa at the right price.0
