Building an extension

I am planning on building an extension in the Glasgow area, I would be grateful for any recommendations as to where to buy insulation, bricks, roof trusses etc

You will probably not get an easy answer to that.
It involves some work on your part if you want to save money.
I drew up a list of the 'first' batch of materials I needed - trench block, dpm, cement, sand, insulation etc, enough to get it to slab height. I then dropped off or emailed my list to 6 local builders merchants for quotes.
They all supplied prices that ranged from £1800 to £2300, but each one was cheap on some things, expensive on others. I then went back to them with the best quotes for each item and one of them matched it and I did the first order for about £1400.
I did the same for the bricks, internal block, timber, cavity slab on so on and so on.
In a nutshell.......... you won't find one supplier is cheapest unless you shop around, do your homework and MAKE THEM COMPETE ON PRICE.
Sorry but I doubt there's a magic wand, it requires a bit of graft and negotiation. Do not be afraid to ask for a discount on everything... I saved a fortune by being cheeky and wheeling and dealing, but then I did go grey in the process!!0 -
When I built my extension I shopped around and just asked for discounts for cash. Not really TESW (Tax Expert Spending Wise) ;o0

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post, I'll shop around, ask for discounts and hopefully not get any greyer than I already am!0

Just a cautionary note- I am almost finished my extension and have had a nightmare with a builder
I won't go in to any detail as it is unprofessional and potentially unwise as I may be taking him to court soon
All I would say is make sure your plans are correct and you have everything in writing (or email as emails are date and time stamped)
The cheap quote is usually the one to avoid (not always, but be wary).
As far as electrics goes make sure the install is done according to the council requirements
An example of a local council reqirements for electrics are here
You should use a competent person for the work, links below
In Scotland:
Individuals registered;

Companies

If you get a builder make sure the price given includes certification for all trades thta require it (such as electric / gas and structural)baldly going on...0
