does it HAVE to be strong flour for a pastie?

daft question I know, but the only answers I can find relate to bread making.
my son's cooking ingredients state strong plain flour for this week, to make either a quiche or a pastie. Does it have to be strong? if so, is the strong bread flour that I've got in the cupboard okay, or is there some sort of difference between strong flour and strong bread flour?

It sounds like he is making pastry and I have never used strong flour for pastry - always just plain flour. So I don't know why they are saying you need strong flour0

I don't know either
it's a cheese and onion pasty, and I've only used shortcrust pastry for pasties (ready made because I'm rubbish at pastry!).
they have ingredients lists for 4 weeks, each week has a choice of 2 things to cook. This week is the only week that strong flour is mentioned, and it's for the quiche or pasty. bah, I don't know.
I've got asda strong bread flour in the cupboard, but because I know nothing about flour I don't know if it's the same thing, or if there's something extra in 'bread' flour.52% tight0 -
I think strong bread flour and strong flour are the same thing. It has more gluten in it, makes a stretchy dough that rises well. I dont think ive ever used it for pastry making and see why your son would need to for his recipe.I use it in a homemade piza base dough.Norn Iron Club member 4730

I always use Bero plain flour for pastry. I've tried other brands but always had the best results with Bero!
Strong flour has something done to the gluten in it, to make bread rise better. I've never used it for pastry though - just for bread. Here I go again on my own....0 -
