    Hi again,

    If you're definite about the topic of your research it would certainly be an idea to start preparing a proposal now.

    It will show commitment and provide a basis for discussion for both you and your potential supervisor's benefit.

    As I remember, that was one of the first things that I did and on the basis of that my supervisor worked with me to get ESRC studentship funding.

    I don't think there's anything wrong with using e-mail myself - so long as you put an appropriate subject etc. Remember most of the communication people who work in a University get on a formal work basis will be by e-mail - it also allows them to respond to you and if they're genuinely interested in what you have to say it shouldn't matter whether it's an e-mail or a letter. At least that's my opinion :)
