our stairs are 30 inches wide
do you think a stair runner would look odd on them? i dont really like the idea of fitted carpet on them, i love the stair runner look, but dont want it to look ridiculous

That doesn't sound that narrow, Victorian terraced houses have narrower stairs and would've only ever had a runner down till last 40 years or so.0

Try a mock-up with a roll of paper. On that width try 19- 20 inches wide (golden ration proportions) to start with.0

Why would it look ridiculous. If you want a runner and you think that it looks ok, what anyone else thinks is neither here nor there. Personally I would always have a fitted carpet through choice, but I would certainly not comment on anyone else's arrangement.I can afford anything that I want.
Just so long as I don't want much.0
