Trojan horse help

I sent my Mum an e-mail with a link to a website - I'd been on the website previously with no problems but when she clicked on the link she got a warning from AVG about a trojan horse. She tried to heal and then remove it but she got a warning saying it could afffect her system so she has just moved it to the virus vault.

I've checked my pc with two anti-virus programs and it seems fine.

The details of the trojan are:

Object name - c:/program file/acergamezone/Jewel Quest Solitare/aJewelQuestSolitare.exe

Detection name - generic2_c.RCL

Object type file SDK TYPE CORE

Can anyone advise how my Mum's pc has got this virus i.e. could it be from my pc and what she needs to do to remove it?

She's using Windows Vista and AVG free edition.

Thanks in advance.

  • Thanks for your replies. My Mum is even less pc literate than I am so I decided to run the scan on my pc first with the idea that I'd then be able to guide her through the process - ithe scan found 4 infected files - the log file is below. Should I also run the second program? Is it ok to keep Malawarebytes on my pc as well as AVG anti-virus?

Yes its fine to have both programs
    Yes id recommend running hijack

And as you have trojans ~
    Please run COMBOFIX
    http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
    Shut down your anti virus
Follow the simple instructions it gives
Post the COMPLETE log it creates here (Split into sections if need be)
If it comes up with a RENAMING error then RIGHT click the exe file and RENAME and call it QWERTY (Making the complete file name 'QWERTY.exe') Or SAVE as 'QWERTY' on download

I've downloaded HijackThis but it won't let me save a log file. I'm getting the following message:

For some reason your system denied write access to the Hosts file. If any hijacked domains are in this file HijackThis may not be able to fix this. If that happens you need to edit the file yourself. To do this click Start, Run and Type:

    notepad C:\Windows\System32drivers\etc\hosts

and press enter. Find the line HijackThisreports and delete them. Save the file as 'hosts' and re-boot.

For Vista simply exit HijackThis, right click on the HijackThis icon and choose Runas administrator.

I am using Vista (Home Basis) but there isn't a run as administrator when I right click.

I'm glad I'm trying this on my own pc before helping my Mum 'cos she really wouldn't have a clue!!!

    What should I do now?

Help! How do I shut down AVG properly? I'm getting a warning saying the linkscanner is still running and to proceed only at my own risk!
