Unfortunately it's nothing to do with lack of appointments - it is just that the antibiotics have to be given time to do their work before the treatment can or will be performed.

The one consolation is that this should only happen once - any sane person will consequently maintain their regime with their dentist to avoid a recurrence.

As for pain management - you can try sluicing cold water over it. Or warm water. It may help calm things for a minute or two at a time at most. But it's usually a case of gibbering and bouncing on one leg and gnawing off one's elbow for a couple of days.

if your going to use oil of cloves, the oil goes on the TOOTH not on the gums, as another poster said, it can cause damage to the gums.. i see your in the west midlands, are you too far to travel to birmingham dental hospital ( just round the back of the old general - now the childrens hospital) again as someone else posted, it maybe that he needs stronger antibiotics untill the infection is reduced enough to be able to treat the tooth.

Thanks Toothsmith, I didn't actually see any so I got the Anbesol anyway. I figured even if it doesn't help it can be used for mouth ulcers and the like. Also wasn't sure how uhm, pleasant clove oil would taste!

Crikey luxor4t, that's awful! He's somewhat okayish eating/drinking at the moment (although eating less than usual) but if it comes to that I'll probably have to give him Angel Delight. I had to eat the stuff for weeks after having my mouth operated on a few years ago... it was heaven when I could eat a proper meal, I felt half starved by the end of it!

Cookie, I've let him squeeze my hand hard a few times now until my fingers feel like they're crumbling :rotfl:I would say labour can't be as bad simply because at least you get a beautiful baby at the end of it!

Thanks KimYeovil, I was unaware of that but it makes sense! If it gets really bad again I can always kick him hard in the foot to take his mind off it (only joking!)

Cheers Lill, probably best I didn't bother as I'm not entirely sure he's willing to touch the tooth anyway!

I could get there pretty easily actually. This is probably a silly question but do you know if you need to ring and book an appointment- or can you simply walk in?

HI, I feel for your OH (and you, the carer!).

I'll preface this by saying I'm not a qualified medical professional. But antibiotics usually start working fairly quickly. The fact that your OH has a fever (despite taking paracetamol and ibuprofen) and is confused sounds a bit worrying - could the infection be getting worse? Could be that he needs a different type of antibiotic (not to mention the obvious need for better pain relief). I'm in Ireland so not sure what services are available in the UK but could you ring dentist/GP/A&E and explain the situation? It sounds like he needs to be seen sooner rather than later.
Trying to spend less time on MSE so I can get more done ... it's not going great so far! :)
Sorry if I don't reply to posts - I'm having MAJOR trouble keeping up these days!

Im 99.9% sure i just walked in when i went heres a link to their site, there might be more info there http://www.nhs.uk/servicedirectories/pages/Hospital.aspx?id=5M121
  • I qualified at Birmingham and honestly honestly, if you're not at the emergency dept first thing in the morning, you probably won't get seen. By about half nine in the morning, they are so full that they have to close to new people so they can treat the people who are already there. I know that's no help to you but it may save you a wasted journey.

I have the number for the emergency dept at the dental hosp if you would like to pm me but don't hold your breath.

Hi NualaBuala, it was pretty bad, he kept complaining he was cold and shivering, and yet was boiling when I felt his forehead. It's been his third day on antibiotics and he has been a bit better today, no fever at all and he said he felt like they were working. He managed to get some sleep as well so his concentration is a lot better.

If he relapses I will definitely give the dentist or our nearest hospital a ring. From my experience of antibiotics I started feeling the difference after 3/4 days so I am hoping he's got over the worst of it and won't need dashing to A&E!

Thanks Lill, I had a look and there seems to be a walk in from 9.00, so if we can get there early he should get seen. I think that's the best option if he feels awful again, even if all we get is some reassurance.
