advice on most economical second hand car

Ok if economy is paramount and chancing my arm, (and probably a leg), at the hands of the anti french car brigade, go for a renault megane in 86hp. Willm never give less than 55mpg even around town and performance is adequate, equal to any 1500cc petrol, the 106hp is better but a bit thirstier.
Now wheter hubby would want to be seen shaking his a!s is another question altogther, which is why I have an est version,
I like the thanks button, but ,please, an I agree button.
Will the grammar and spelling police respect I do make grammatical errors, and have carp spelling, no need to remind me.;)

are parts cheap as OH would be able to do most repairs himself?
is zetec the model to go for or are there higher specs?
if you look at the whatcar link, that gives you a good idea of which spec/trim/engine to buy and what to avoid.... "Which one should I get0 -
economy is paramount to me but OH would want something he can have fun in. a bit of compromise will have to be had. he would never go for a megane though.0

I'd be tempted just to sell the Saxo, better the devil you know and all that0

he is too scared at how much the vectra will cost in fuel though.0

Let's assume you will be driving just 5000 miles a year. In a really economical car, say one doing 45mpg (you'll be lucky in town driving!) you will use about 110 gallons, or 500 litres of fuel. At £1.15 a litre that will cost you £575 a year. Now, if you assume the Vectra does half that, 22.5mpg, it will cost you double, £1150 a year. How does £575 a year sound compared to the depreciation on a newer car?Skip dipper and proud....0

very good point - puts things into perspective. why didnt i think of it like that? now i feel stupid!!0

You can always sell the Vectra later. Just take it one step at a time and pause for a few weeks/months before deciding on your next move.
Trading in one car at time will also be easier.0 -

Don't feel silly, thousands of people are lured into buying new(er) cars with the prospect of greater reliability and better fuel economy! In reality, car ownership costs are more than just fuel...
Given your mileage, don't worry too much about fuel economy. Instead, concentrate on costs such as purchase price, depreciation, interest charges on any borrowing to fund purchase, insurance, tax, maintenance.
Even if a newer car ran on fresh air, you'd still probably be worse off than you would if you kept the Vectra just with first year depreciation!Skip dipper and proud....0 -
