van service - fan belt snapped week after

Hi All, Newbie here (don't all point and laugh at once!).
Just to say first that this site is fantastic!
I wonder if anyone would be willing to help me on this one?
I put my 51 plate Renault Kangoo in for a service - Myself and my family have used this garage for years and had no problems.
However, the week after my service - the van shuddered and stopped (I knew that this was not a good day!). I had a look and seen that the fan belt had snapped - I called the AA out and we replaced it. However - it seems that the fan belt debris had got into the timing belt casing and caused that to fail - and we all know what that means!
The engine is more or less ruined! The AA guy showed me the fan belt he had removed and indeed it was very badly worn.
My question is - should the garage have either informed me of this, recommended it to me and what is it they are obligated to do?
