Ps what does 'misrouted' mean, where would it go instead of where it should?

I don't think the items go to a post office, they go to some kind of big Royal Mail centre before going back - or not - to del office.

for an item to have 48 hours on the back it is being pouched off in one form or another
some use drop boxes that a driver clears the next day
most send their items back via the post office
so from the PO these items are collected and go to the mail centre(sorting hubs)
from there the items should be sent to the delivery office for the next day

    misrouting can take many forms
locally the items could get sent to the wrong delivery office
if an item gets put into a york by mistake it could be going anywhere
UK or international! i have seen packets go abroad by mistake but its less common

when pouching off a postie should use blue pouch bags
these have the office/duty number on the outside
they should be easily spotted and fast tracked in the mail centres

however often staff dont have blue pouches
even if they do,with the rise in packet traffic and the size of items foot deliveries take you cant fit them in the blue pouches
loose packages will take longer to return to the delivery office
even worse is if they have sorting barcodes the machines can often misroute them if they go through loose

Yes, I suppose the boom in internet buying must have put a big strain on the whole system.
