HMV prices!

Options
I was very excited about our shopping trip to Carlisle today as we don't have many shops near us (sad, I know!). I was especially excited about being able to browse some large music stores (Virgin, HMV and Musiczone) (even sadder!).

I had heard about HMV lowering prices due to supermarket competition and was pleased to examine the ralatively cheap chart cds. Then I moved to the METAL! section and was horrified that most cds were £16.99! What's that all about! It seems they have not extended this policy to non-chart cds (which is a !!!!!!, because hardly any of the music I like is in the charts - ROCK ON!)

Anyway, I went to musiczone and bought a dvd and a couple of cds for about £8 cheaper than HMV! Virgin was a bit better than HMV.

I think the moral of the story here is.......

    BUY OFF THE INTERNET

and use a price comparison engine like:

    http://www.best-cd-price.co.uk/
The word is BOUGHT, not BROUGHT.
    It's LOSE, NOT LOOSE.
You ask for ADVICE not ADVISE.
  • Yeah, you're right, and I normally do - but it is nice to browse a bit in shops. I expect to pay a bit more than the internet, but in some cases it is more than twice as much in HMV!

Yup, browsing can be nice and whilst it is nice to come home with a bag of goodies it can also be good to just come back with inspiration and then get online to get them cheaper

hmv metal prices are horreendous, because they are set off and less common therefore they sell less the price is higher. they sell at that price because they can!!! i buy metal cds off ebay from america as much cheaper.

Try http://www.amazon.de for discounted metal CDs. Metal is very popular in Germany! You can use a translation website to work out what is what. Plenty of stuff there which is not on amazon.co.uk.

Another handy CD finding site is http://www.find-cd.co.uk

And also GEMM (http://www.gemm.com) for imports etc.

For Metal it's easiest to buy from eBay or the Amazon.de site mentioned above, especially compared to HMV who see metal as a slightly dirty word :( Failing that, CD's are always cheaper at shows. Kerrang! still give away £35 HMV vouchers though if you bother to write in a Rant!!

    I've got a £40.00 HMV card-type-voucher-thing that I've had since Christmas '04.

Every time I go in I think "I'm not paying that, I can get it much cheaper elsewhere!"

If you lend someone a tenner and never see them again, it was probably worth it.
  • the HMV where i used to live in chester was crap for prices, they hardly ever updated prices of cds, and were so much cheaper buying them off their website

eg:typical metal cd £17 in store, £9/10 online.

its quite amazing how many different copies of the same cd have different prices on them.

Don't think I have bought a CD or DVD from a shop for about 4 years. Internet rules here and to be honest I don't see a long term future for the likes of HMV, etc. With broadband taking over the UK the chance tol listen/view samples online together with a huge price saving will always win
