is this the norm?

hi, my daughter along with young grandaughter and her partner, have just been helped by their council to move into a house that will cost £300 p week rent! although, apparently they wont have to pay all this,as there is some sort of rebate scheme. £300 p week, yet no washing machine, or any phone line! i just hope the furniture thats being delivered by the owner is going to be worth the rent! is this normal? i mean not to supply a washing machine?
the house is in a suburb of london.:(:o:eek:

I've rented 6 different properties in different locations in London, both furnished and unfurnished and never not had a washing machine. I also know several other people in the same position and there has always been a washing machine. (I have viewed properties were there wasnt a fridge though!) However, I dont believe it's a requirement unless the tenants were specifically promised that a washing machine was to be installed.

Unfurnished flats DO NOT need to be supplied with any furniture or white goods.

£300 per week isn't all that high for parts of London (especially if it's a house and not a flat).

Presumably if the LL is delivering furniture it's a furnished let, but "furnished" can mean pretty much anything. I rented one "furnished" flat that had everything, including bed linens and cooking equipment, and I've rented another "furnished" flat that had an oven, a microwave, and two wardrobes - not even a bed.

Washing machines, along with all other furniture, can sometimes be negotiated with LLs. Is there plumbing for a washing machine?

thanx all for your quick replies. i presume its furnished as they are delivering furniture today! but, i, would personally expect a bloody phone connection at least! i mean its going to cost quite a bit for bt to connect. i just hope its ok.
its EALING COUNCIL, and they put quite a lot of pressure on her when she went to view the property with the baby, apparently, the council rep at the viewing threatend to withdraw the offer if her partner didn't arrive within 30 mins. so,he had to hurry from his work. luckily, he made it in time. when i heard this my blood began to boil! in this councils guise of help, they have sent her to a viewing of a 2 bed flat, only to find on arriving it was a studio on the 5th floor! and sent her and her partner to a viewing in which neither landlord nor council rep turned up! even after the partner arranged a day off work!
for their sake and especially my grandaughter, i hope its all worth it!
    thanx again.:)

tell me why you "expect" this ?

    your daughter is being given a property by the council, which some folks have to wait over 20 years for in London;

if you buy a property why would you "expect" to be provided with a phone line.. why you think renters should be treated in any preferential way is beyond me.... these things cost money and yet you expect someone else to pay for it for her... she is already getting public subsidy for some of her rent and no doubt some of her council tax as well....

do you have any idea how greedy and ungrateful you sound ?

Rebate scheme? Do you mean Local Housing Allowance (formerly Housing Benefit)?

Generally, tenants are responsible for arranging and paying for a phone connection and to determine/negotiate ahead of accepting the tenancy what goods/furniture is supplied.

If your daughter is on a low income, she may find there are furniture charities, such as Emmaus, that can supply a washing machine at low cost, or perhaps a large local charity shop that provides electrical equipment. Also, she could look into Gumtree freebies or Freecycle for items that she needs that are given away for free.

I was assuming it was a private rental that the local council facilitated, perhaps on a private sector lease or some kind of scheme to introduce LHA tenants to DSS friendly landlords rather than social housing, but the OP can clarify.

Funny the way people who are getting subsidised housing, seem to expect all sorts of "rights" that are not available to those paying the full price.

The phone line is the responsibility of the tenants. I've never moved to a rented property expecting a phone line, and have always had to sort this out myself.
