You could always bulk cook them and freeze them, then they are ready to be chucked in anytime you need them.
  • I'm going to try and make a Nut and Aduki Bean Loaf tomorrow, as I still have frozen chestnuts in the freezer that I bought after Christmas from Sainsbury's because they were cut price. I must get rid of them as the freezer needs a bit of a defrost. Will report back as to my success or otherwise!!!!??!!
  • I bought a bag of Aduki Beans many moons ago, when I was intending on following the Gillian McKeith healthy eating regime. Needless to say I never got further than just reading her book and buying a few ingredients.

    lol..thats what i did!
yes the beans are fab ... but i ran out a couple of weeks ago and ended up using a tin of baked beans (rinsed tom sauce of em in a collander) instead! just as good!

    :D

  • I can't stand aduki (also adzuki) beans.

We used to share a house with an army of cockroaches, and their egg cases look like aduki beans.

    Enjoy.
To buy or not to buy, need not be in question

They are dirt cheap in the green market in Newcastle, i think 39p for a 100g.

I have used them before, filling and nice. However "beans beans good for the heart...." was true!

I've got the Gillian McKeefe(sp?) book too but not done much with it. She doesn't look that healthy herself does she? unless she's 97 in which case she looks great.

My mam used to say this about kidney beans, so when I lived at home, if I made chilli, I had to use baked beans for my dads portion, even now, he wont touch kidney beans, if he comes to tea, we make a seperate one for him

Quiick soaking method for aduki beans and some other pulses which require overnight soaking. Put in large container with cold water, bring to boil and boil rapidly for a few mins. Turn off heat and leave for an hour or so, drain water and then use as if they had been soaked overnight.
If I am not using a load of pulses, I often do this in pyrex bowl in microwave.

Am not advising this method for kidney beans due to toxins, and not sure if quick soak method can be used - not done it myself.

Also don't ever put salt in when cooking or soaking beans, salt can be added when beans/pulses fully cooked.

I tend to make up recipes as I go along, using any kind of lentil or pulse, just cook a bit longer for some pulses. Red lentils will cook in about 15-20 mins whereas kidney beans, aduki beans will take a bit longer - I normally give them about an hour cooking. Throw in some veggies, whatever I have, sometimes I saute them first, does give a better flavour, but otherwise chop & throw in, add some stock and seasoning, could be tin tomatoes or/and some stock cubes, herbs, spices, splash mushroom ketchup (Worcestershire sauce for meat eaters), tomato puree or use gravy granules. Then you can top with mashed potatoes/sliced cooked potatoes or make lasagne, moussaka. Just vary the herbs and spices a bit depending on what you fancy.

The Bean Book by Rose Elliot has lots of good recipes for using pulses. Even if you're not a veggie they can very tasty, as well as being good for you and much cheaper than meat.
