Storing movies windows movie maker

Help Please
i have around 20 Mini DV tapes with footage of my children over the last 5 years.
I wish to put them onto the PC with the hope of one day editing them, but i also want to make a back up onto DVD
My PC has windows movie maker.
Can i have some advice please as to how they should be saved onto the pc, ie what format and compression and thenhow to save on to dvd etc

An under the telly DVD recorder with a firewire port is the easiest option, especially if you want to do the video's as well. You can get combi units with video and/or hard disk as well.
To do it on a PC, you'll need a firewire card. and a TV card or usb adapter for the video's.
