Strange you can get onto safe mode..

Have you recently installed any new software or hardware? Try doing a system restore while in safe mode to a time before the crashes started and see what happens.

I would say its the boot process but then safe mode wouldnt work I dont think... If it is the boot process, use windows automatic recovery console to use the commands

    FIXMBR
    then
    FIXBOOT

and that should fix the prob. WRC can be accessed from the windows disk (boot into the disk and then hit R for recovery console)

do you have anything extra plugged in?

try start, run, chkdsk c: /F/R

    answer y and reboot

it could be a corrupt profile, did you shut it down properly?

also, see if there are any errors in eventvwr

    Try albertross' idea first.

If that doesnt work.. get a genuine copy of Windows XP

Put it in your machine and restart. When it says press any key to boot from cd, hit any key..

When you get to the windows xp setup.. keep going through until you see an option to go into the Windows Automatic Recover Console by pressing R. At that screen press R

When it asks you which version of windows to boot into, select the only one there.

You will then get a command prompt. Simply type

    FIXBOOT
    and hit return

    and then

    FIXMBR
    and hit return.

Once done exit and restart your machine (hold power button down to switch off and then switch on again)

    See if that works :)

If it doesnt it is almost definitely something being loaded at startup... either a device driver or a piece of software..

Surely if it can boot into safe mode the Boot/mbr are fine?

    Garcia I agree...

Yet if a system restore didnt fix the problem i dont see how it can be a device driver problem :s thus what else apart from the boot record could it be?

Some of the boot process is skipped during safe mode isnt it? Not sure
