Refilling moisture traps

I know that I have seen something about this on an MSE forum before but when I put this into the search facility loads of posts come up and I can't find the relevant one.
Anyhow, I have a number of these traps in my bathroom and bedroom where there is a lot of condensation. Now they are getting full and need the crystals inside replacing. They have a thin paper lid on them though and i was wondering if anyone knows whether it is ok to remove this to replace the crystals. There are no children or pets in the house so leaving them open should not be a hazard.
I know that you can buy the refills from Wilkinsons

You had get refillable moisture traps and extra bags of crystals from The Range. I haven't seen the ones with the paper lid like you describe, but i cant see anything wrong with taking the lid off."It's official, MSE's harbouring total fruitcakes">^..^<0

I always remove the paper lid and refill these.
I've had some for years and they're still going strong.
The paper lid is irrelevant just fill it up with new crystals and place in position where you want it.0 -

Thanks all. How harmful are the old crystals? Can they burn your skin if touched? I was just wondering what the best way of disposing of them is0 -
Can't you regenerate the crystals by placing them in an oven on the 'low' setting for a 10 to 15 minutes???"You were only supposed to blow the bl**dy doors off!!"0

Is that safe?0 -
My crystals always turn to water and the few mushy ones left in the tray get rinsed out in the sink.
I never wear gloves or anything and they never harm my hands but they do tell you on the packet to protect your hands and not to inhale the crystals.
The crystals that can be dried out in the oven and re-used are totally different to the ones used in normal moisture traps that are meant to absorb water and dissolve.0 -
I have these moisture traps in my bedrooms and the bathroom. They were bought in Wilkinsons.
When I notice that they are filling up with water-about an inch in the bottom-I simply empty them into the sink, leaving the `sieve lid` on so that the crystals don`t fall out. The crystals eventually evaporate - when they get wet they disolve and when this happens I fill them up with a refill tub of crystals-also from Wilkinsons. This works out cheaper than buying the packets.
I removed the paper `filter` lid long ago and there doesn`t seem to make any difference to it`s performance.
They may be small but I am still shocked by how much water they collect...that`s water that would be in my walls or furnishings.
