Right, I am looking at a budget of max £700.
My main requirements are:
* Small and lightweight i.e. no bigger than 14.4inch screen no heavier that a macbook (2.36kg) etc
* Wireless built in
* If possible half decent graphics for occasional gaming
So far i have considered a macbook at £700 (which if bought closer to uni time I will prob get some special offer as well as the full discount).
- 13.3-inch widescreen display, 1280 x 800 resolution,
- 1.83GHz Intel Core Duo1
- 512MB memory (2 x 256MB SODIMMs)
- 60GB 5400-rpm Serial ATA hard drive 2
- Combo drive (DVD-ROM, CD-RW)
- Intel GMA 950 graphics processor with 64MB of DDR2 SDRAM shared with main memory
- WEIGHS 2.36 kg
Dell N076M6 Inspiron 640m
Intel Core™ Duo Processor T2050 (1.66 GHz
Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
1024MB 533MHz Dual Channel DDR2
100GB (5,400rpm) Hard Drive
Internal 8X DVD+/-RW
Intel Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini PCI Wireless LAN Card
14.1" Wide Screen WXGA (1280x800) TFT Display
Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 950TM integrated graphics
- WEIGHS 2.5KG
- £709 all inc
Or £590.66 Dell outlet, but with 80gb HD.
I have looked at the Dell Inspiron 1300, but seems a tad heavy.
This on ebay, lower processor spec and not too sure about the very small screen, but defo portable! wonder what they will sell at...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=290011324652&fromMakeTrack=true
Someone might find this useful, but I use the following table to help compare processor speeds:

Even with the higher spec and cheaper dell..... the Mac is still so tempting!.... HELP!

3KG sounds heavy, and it is rather heavy, but it all depends on what kind of distances you are going to be carrying the laptop.
I have walked a couple of miles carrying the one I have before, its uncomfortable at first but you get used to it
These 12.1" Ultra Portable machines have always interested me, but you must bear in mind the size of the keyboards, I reckon they would be pretty uncomfortable.
The two machines you have shown arent THAT much lighter than the Inspiron 1300, and to be honest, unless you need the performance (what are you going to be using it for?) aren't worth the extra money... Ultraportable in my mind would be the likes of the Dell Latitude X1 (which is around £1000 but weighs in at just over 1KG)
Oh yeah, that ebay listing is almost certainly a scam. AVOID0 -
about that laptop on ebay, i thought it looked dodgy at first, but it looks legit to me... the sellers rating is good, and that includes several embers who have bought something from him and they have very high ratings.. its also the legit ebay site (not a mockup) so may be worth considering. I have a Vaio FS315B and its a great laptop, wish i could get one of the TX series.
having said that, the seller is in the US.... caution woulnt go amiss.
EDIT: hadnt read the previous sales ... read below posts - dont touch with a barge pole. (or any other kind of pole)0 -
These are as light as they come (1.7KG), and leaves you with plenty of money to upgrade.. you could get a new gaming desktop as well for the difference in cost..

or if you must have a newer one..

Look at the items in his feedback, hardly corresponding with the items he has for sale (ie not a hutchload of Sony VAIO laptops)
Asking to email an address with questions etc, is also alarming.
eBay account hijacks happen very often, and more often than not its a lot of high value laptops like this that are put up for sale.
I wouldnt touch it with a 10 foot bargepole.0 -
see all the other laptops he has up for sale???
http://search.ebay.co.uk/_W0QQsassZ505larrys
He says this in every one:
******MORE UNITS AVAILABLE******
WE HAVE TWO UNITS AVAILABLE FOR SALE.0 -
internet surfing and word don't need a high spec..whatever laptop you get is going to be out of date in 18 months anyway. Buy anything too fancy, and it may get nicked..
It's a third of your budget.. buy a gaming desktop with the rest, you get much more for your money with a desktop.Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time? :rolleyes:0 -

I agree with Kilty. His previous sales include dog-leads and flu-pandemic-kits. Not exactly what you'ld call a reputable seller of quality merchandise. Plus the fact he is an american who's been trading in the US then suddenly is selling these laptops from Oxford.
The nail in the coffin is that he has a gmail address. People - never, ever trust anyone who has a gmail address!!!0 -
If proof were needed look at this:
Ebay search for Sony T2XP/S
505larrys
drhook1020
eflbooks
grmadbraille
all selling the same 2 laptops, all from Oxford, all at roughly similar times. You don't have to be Shaw Taylor to know that something funny is up.
Keep 'em peeled.0
