halifax charges query

Had a letter from Halifax today saying they were going to charge me for going overdrawn on 20th July.
I use online banking and knew I was very close, so had transferred 50 quid into the account on 20th to make sure I did not go over my limit.

AT NO TIME DID MY ONLINE BANKING SHOW THAT I EXCEEDED MY OVERDRAFT LIMIT.

I visited the local branch today for an explanation; helpful staff agreed to reverse the 30 quid charge, but tried to explain how it had happened. Apparently, the debits from the account took me over the limit during the business day, before the 50 quid credit corrected that, still during the business day. So even though I was under my limit at the end of the day, they tried to charge me for exceeding my limit during the day.

YET THEIR T&C'S SAY THEY CALCULATE INTEREST DAILY !!!! - supposedly on daily balances.

Anyone else had a similar experience ? I'm so annoyed I'm going to get all Victor Meldrew on them and write a letter.
Karma is a wonderful thing. ;)

  • Hi Victor

I think if you read this board you will find many who have had the same problem you are having now. I don't bank with the haifax but have a good read and i'm sure youwill find what you're looking for as well as that look on the Halifax section of the bank action group and good luck
  • I would suggest asking for all your bank statements from the bank. Add up what they have taken from you over 6 years and go to the small claims court to get it back. Believe me they will pay up before you even set foot in court. I got back £731 from natwest the same way. Good look.,

direct debits can be applied for say early in the morning before the bank opens - so when you pay in your £50, effectively you were still over limit until then - that is why they say your funds should be there in advance

They do jonny, on CLOSING balances.

Your account T&C's also say that you need to have money in the account THE DAY BEFORE a direct debit/standing order is paid, or a cheque is presented to your account. Usually, the only exception to this 'rule' are Direct Credit's (eg your salary) already in the BACS system and due to hit the account on the day your outgoing payments are registered.

You'll be wasting your time because a) you've had your charge refunded, and b) they'll just refer you to the account T&C's (as I've done above). Chalk it down to experience and apply the learning to the management of your other accounts.
