Checked my crdit file a few days ago and it has been removed from my credit file with no trace of it anywhere. Could i try to claim the £500 set off payment that they took from my account?0

No. What would be your rationale?0 -

Your attitude is wrong. Claim what back, you OWE the bank. You spent 5.5k of their money and don't want to pay it back. Will you lend me 5.5k and ill pay you £500 back then ill claim this from you as I feel this is too much to pay you. You get the idea?

You cannot reclaim money that you owe them.
Even though the debt does not appear on your credit file they could still take you to court for the remainder of the debt - if they do then of course the CCJ will then appear on your file again.
Even though it does not appear on your credit file you still owe them the rest of the debt - if you have another account with HSBC they could again offset money that you owe them.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

I think zx means what would be your legal argument that you would put to HSBC to persuade them to return £500 to you, when you owe them over £5,000.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

I have never had any CCJ on my file, as far as i undrestood it yes i still owe the debt i didn't pay it but because the 6 year period has passed they have no way to claim it from me? Maybe i'm wrong?0 -

You don't have a CCJ yet - you could still get one.
You are wrong - they have 6years to take you to court from the date of the offset payment.
There has not been a period of 6years with no payment yet, and so the debt is not statute barred yet.A smile enriches those who receive without making poorer those who giveor "It costs nowt to be nice"0 -

At least half of the £5000 were intrest charges and various other charges including miss sold PPI when i couldn't continue with the minimum payments, I'd hardly say HSBC treat customers fairly! They have probably had my debt paid back to them 3 times over in interest over the years.0
