Faulty Shower. What are my rights?

I bought an electric shower from B&Q in early 2008. It's now developed a fault which makes it unusable. I can't find the receipt anywhere so I contacted the manufacturer and they told me that although they offer a two year warranty the serial number on the unit gives that date of manufacture as more than two years ago so I will need to pay £90 up front for a service engineer.
I'm wondering whether this is worth persuing and should I chase up the manufacturer or B&Q?
Doesn't the law give protection for up to six years? Maybe if it was 5 or 6 years old I would just chuck it and buy a new one but I don't think it's unreasonable to expect a shower to last more than 2 years.

In order to claim under SoGA you will need to provide some sort of proof of purchase (bank statement, receipt etc). Without this, you have no proof of when or where you bought it.
If you do have proof of purchase, B&Q are within their rights to ask you to provide an independent engineers report proving that the fault is inherent and not down to general wear and tear/misuse.0 -
I had a Triton shower manufactured in 2005, that I purchased in 2008.
I sent off the receipt and registration warranty at the time of purchase, and a fault was fixed FOC back in December 20090 -
Yes, the manufacturers warranty should start on the day of purchase, not when it was manufactured, I think they're trying to fob you off. OP, do you have any proof of purchase, without it you're going to find it difficult in getting anyone to provide a remedy.0
