Attracting Council Tax

We have a small plot of land on which we are thinking of putting up a couple of garages. These will be for our own use and not for commercial purposes. The land is not attached or adjoining our house but very close.
Does anyone know if I will have to pay council tax on it? I have searched my local council's website and the situation is not too clear. It says council tax is payable on 'dwellings' - is a garage a dwelling? I certainly don't intend to 'dwell' there.

I think the answer is no, Council Tax isn't chargable. What might be is water / sewage rates. That I think, depends on where the rainwater runs off to.

What got me worrying about it was hearing that cash machines were now having to pay council tax, and this in turn attracted water rates. Now how much water does your average cash machine use?
I'm hoping water rates won't apply either as most of the water 'soaks' away rather than 'runs off' and there is no water supply to the property.

I think that's the technicality. If it drains into the sewers then you pay water and sewerage charge.

In some areas you may need planning permission, so check with the planning department at your local authority.

Hmm, just got our new rates information bill for 2007 (N.Ireland just catching up with the rest of the country and rates now according to value of property) and our garage is included in the total sq metres that are valued, so we are indeed paying council tax on garages:rolleyes:
