Complete newbie bit of advice please :)
Hi,
I thought i would get into growing a few off my own Veg this year....
So I went out and bought a cheap greenhouse (self erect) from B&M for £9.99
Bought a couple of Grow bags
I "needed" the bag and lossened the soil...
I then emptied the whole pack of tomato seeds into ONE grow bag? Is this ok will I get any tomatoes should I have just put 6 or so seeds into it?
I have also done the same with cucumbers?
Also at the moment I have my greenhouse INSIDE my conservatory? Will this be ok or will it be to warm? Its just we have some ground frost in the morning here?
Sorry for what seems silly questions, new to all this and thanks in advance for your advice.

Possibly overkill to have them in the greenhouse in the conservatory - I'd stick the greenhouse outside or pack it away until the plants are ready to go outside. Keep the growbag and seeds inside until they are a decent size and then put the whole lot in the greenhouse outside (after hardening off - gradually getting them used to colder outside temperatures). To be honest you could keep them in the conservatory all summer if you want as long as you keep them well watered, although you may have to manually pollinate them.
Bit of a waste to put the whole packet of seeds into the grow bag, as you'll only really have room for about 4-6 plants when they are full size. If all 4 start producing tomatos you'll have plenty for most people's uses.
However as they come up, pick the ones you want to keep (strongest plants) and repot the others into pots and give them to friends who might like to grow their own. To be honest seeds don't have an infinite shelf life so you'd only have been keeping them for one further year maximum so you've only wasted half the cost of the packet, and sometimes when you are learning its better to sow too many and have scope for a few watering crises etc whilst still having enough to grow.Adventure before Dementia!0 -
If you're going to keep your greenhouse in the conservatory all the time it'll be way too hot in the summer. Best bet is to stand it outside. You'll then be able to have the sides of it open in the warmer weather, this also allows circulation of air around your plants etc. You can then shut the sides down on the cooler evenings.
The grow bags are best used for young plants ready to go out. Your best bet would have been to sow just a few seeds in a tray or pot, then transplanting them on. As WestonDave said it's overkill and also a waste.
You'll be surprised how many tomatoes you get from one plant.I get paid to smell great :j0 -
Hi,
Sorry I didnt explain myself properly.. I am only putting the greenhouse inside until the weather picks up a bit, I was just making sure I dont kill the plants to be honest but once weather pics up I will transfer the greenhouse outside.
... I did think I went a bit overboard on the seeds
Although what I will do is transfer the overflow into pots and keep them growing seperately etc...
Thanks for taking your time to reply.0 -
You could even pot on the extras and sell them for an extra few bob

Good idea, or swap them with someone who has grown too many of something else.2026's challenges: 1) To rebuild our Emergency Fund to at least £5k.
