You can renew your 10 year passport at any time, but they will only add on a maximum of 9 months extra to the new one.

    http://www.passport.gov.uk/passport_renewing_eligible.asp

Mine expires next May, renewing it ASAP to beat the increase.

You can actually apply for a passport up to 6 months before it runs out.

It sounds a lot but it is for 10 years so it does equate to approx 2p a day.

If you don't have passports it will be ID cards instead as I had a feeling but could be totally wrong that you use to be able to travel within the UK for flights and via europe with a driving licence as it is photo ID.

I know people who in the past been to france and went via eurostar and where never asked for any id at all.

Children are hardly going to qualify for driving licences oh and by the way if you have photo one you have to renew them evey 10 years and that costs as well.

If you think the charges are maddening-just wait till you try to filll in the form correctly AND submit an accurate photo.

form and photo are easy, the main problem people have is either the wrong documents or the person who countersigns the form isnt eligable. as for the photos the guides are pretty accurate and theres now an "allowance" for under 5 year olds as they are smaller and harder to get them sitting right.

And I'm not sure what you mean by "subsidised by the taxpayer" - I was suggesting that British citizens should be able to move freely between European countries. How would that cost the taxpayer money?
I think Voyager2002 believes low income = on benefits. However, I am more open minded and am aware this could mean only one person in household working min wage - kids expensive and so on.

But either way, what people do with their money is their own choice. Some spend it all on beer, some on cigs - I'm personally much more concerned about funding those as they go on to drain the already failing NHS. So if somone *does* happen to be on benefits and not spending it all on Beer and Cigs, 48" colour televisions - and they buying the cheaper morissons bettabuy instead of the overpriced kellogs, nescafe, marks and spencers etc etc who's to say you can't go on holiday?! Especially when holidays abroad are cheap compared with what they used to be and many places in britain.
  • my sister got married recently and sen the passport in to get her name changed on it.

    £51 !! :O
I have no more money to give - all you companies out there - do your worst - I give in!! :(

    lol
Take it you work for the post office then?
Would you be one of the same po assistants who trimmed my photo to size thereby cutting through the declaration on the back.
Or one of the two assistants, first one told me my photo was ok,then second one told me I was smiling, so it might not be accepted!

If it so easy why didnt anyone know for sure if my legal change of name document could be accepted-they are not listed as necessary documentation.

Thats the trouble with us consumers-we just dont understand easy things.

Passport fee is set to rise AGAIN! Last years rip off rise wasn't enough (£51 from £42). This year it will rise to £66 from £51. What can we do about this? And they charge you 0870 to ring them! Don't lose your passport either because the con artists make you pay for it all over again!

If the photos are so easy, why has mine been returned 3 times? Not because I'm smiling, or not looking straight, but because I'm too white! I have very pale skin (even in summer, as I have to wear sunblock or I burn), people are always commenting on how pale I am. Well the passport agency won't accept my photo as it says I'm too pale so I don't stand out enough from the background. I've tried sending 3 different sets of photos from 3 different photo booths, and every one has been rejected
