What's Virgin broadband like?

Tossing up options for a new internet connection. With quidco offering £150 for a sign up at £18/month with 2 months free on a 12 month contract it works out to £30 for the 1st year which seems awesome value.

My only query is with regards to internet quality. Are they any good?

Cheers,
Pete

    It isn't quite that cheap.

I was looking at the VM bundles and every one of them has...

*Plus a Virgin phone line for £11.99 a month in very small text.

You'd have to add another £144 to your costings.

The show stopper for me is that I don't think you can use carrier select with a Virgin phone so I'd need their call bundle too and that starts pushing the price up a lot past my current BT line + O2 + 1899 for calls. I place zero value on the TV as I can already get umpteen channels of absolute dross for nothing.

The BB is dearer on its own than it is with the phone and you only get Quidco on bundles.

10Mb BB only is £15 a month for 3 months, £20 after that = £225 with no Quidco so far as I can see.

It also depends on which Virgin broadband package you choose and then how much you use it.

If you hit the download thresholds during peak hours (that's all afternoon and evening) VM will throttle your speed by 75% - which is seriously noticeable.

The download thresholds change depending on which package you choose, even though they are all "unlimited".

E.g. if you pick broadband size L (10Mbps) you'll get throttled if you download more than 1.5GB between 4pm and 9pm.

Broadband XL (20Mbps) gets throttled at 3.5GB between 4pm and 9pm. And then broadband XXL (50Mbps) has no throttling.

If you do get throttled it'll last for 5 hours too.

It works OK most the time, at my girlfriends house, but think it's poor value compared to the other deals around - Talk Talk is what I'm looking at now.

The TV packages don't make it any better value, either.

I've got AOL & it works as good as Virgin, but it's not all that exceptoional, especially if you try & watch video clips.

This is in Luton, so worth checking broadband speeds in your town.

The Cable broadband service is usually very good, as long as you aren't in an over-utilized area, as since the TW/NTL merger and lease of Virgin name, cable are a lot slower at sorting out these over-utilized issues.

The ADSL service (down a BT phone line) is dreadfully poor and should be avoided.

Cost isn't everything, I learnt the hard way with TalkTalk, never again!
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!
