How much just to emulsion a ceiling 6' by 4' please? (Plain, no artex or anything)
Is it likely that anyone would take on the job or would they want to do the walls as well
and be likely to give a silly quote for just the ceiling?

most trades will charge a minimum days work or maybe a half day if youre lucky.
so you can budget for 100/150 quid.
when i do a contract job for business/commerce, i have a minimum charge of 1 days fee.Get some gorm.0 -
Find a local diy handyman, normally plenty in local papers, might be cheaper!0

Assuming its a two coat job, with no prep about £45-50 labour would seem reasonable to me. its only a few hrs work, someone could 1st coat it, take their dinner and 2nd coat it up.0
