Bath/shower - is tanking required

Hi, I've read a bit about waterproofing the tiles in the shower area and bath by tanking it. I asked my bathroom fitter and he said he was using hardebacker and with the right sealants etc it would be good enough. Still, I'm a bit worried about a sploshing toddler plus if I convert shower to power shower...
Would it be overkill to tank it too?

As long as you are having a shower tray, not a tiled floor to the shower you will be fine with a properly tiled area. The guy gets points for not using plasterboard. make sure he uses high quality and the correct adhesive types BAL are probably the best brand.0

Thanks, it's actually a shower over the bath, will probably get used once or twice a day max. I will ask him about the adhesives tomorrow!0 -
I would use a membrane everytime
Grout is not water proof only resistant to will allow water to penetrate
Homleux matting 1 roll £50
1/2 bad of Mapei Keraquick £10
Labour less than a hour and can be tiled on immediatly
So say £100....Is it really worth not getting it done!
Plasterboard is fine aswell aslong as it has been covered in a tanking membrane, Cememt boards have there place but why use when theres a cheaper alternativeHi, we’ve had to remove your signature. If you’re not sure why please read the forum rules or email the forum team if you’re still unsure0
