Friend jailed - rent payment + deposit?

I have a question.
A friend of mine got jailed and he wanted to know what about his Rent + Deposit?

He paid for 1 month already and got jailed 3 days after making payment. The flat is now back on the market for new tenants, so my friend (previous tenant, now in jail) wants to know if he's entitled to receive his rent + deposit back?

It happened in the middle of the contract but he cannot do anything as he's in jail now - so is there any protection for him in this case or both his rent + deposit are gone?!

Thanks!!

Has your friend formally surrendered the tenancy? If he has he is still contracted to pay the full rent up to the day new tenants move in, plus any costs incurred in finding new tenants. If he has not surrendered the tenancy he is still liable BUT the landlord/ letting agents would be breaking the law by entering or reletting the property - they have to apply for abandonment. Has your friend had anyone read the meters, inform the council tax and utilities that he is no longer a resident and (hopefully) no longer liable for the bills? Clearly doesn't want to come out to debt collectors chasing him.

That was a bit careless of him.

Did he not have any idea that a custodial sentence was in the offing?
