Who do I contact re utilities etc in new house?

Hi, I'm hoping to complete on Thursday this week and move house on the following Monday. The vendors are unavailable (they've already moved house) and we are dealing with their solicitor. I wondered if I need to get details of utility companies etc to let them know I'm moving in. Unfortunately solicitor doesn't have these details, neither does EA, vendors seem totally unhelpful. If we do complete Thurs, I have 4 days grace before I move from my rented flat. Can I just call up the gas and electric companies of my choice and ask them to connect me? Or do I need to know who the vendors used, and if so, can I compel their solicitor to find out? And how long does it generally take to get re-connected (I think leccy and gas are still connected but in vendor's name). Thanks a lot!

M-number (gas) 0870 6081524 and M-Pas (leccy) 0845 3300889 will give you the current suppliers for the property. You may need your meter readings to hand when you call them. Once you know the suppliers, you can find out if there's a live supply or whether you will need to be reconnected.0
