EDF Final Settlement problem

Afternoon all,
I have just had a phone call from EDF saying that i owe them £70 and they need to collect payment. I asked them what for (i am not with EDF any more) and they said it was a final meter reading in a house i moved out of in March 2008. I thought we had squared up all the bills when we moved out, she went to have a look at what was going on and found out - we had 4 different reading values in the place, one for each of the different times (so our meter kept a record of number of units used during the night, number used during the day etc) and it would appear that when i gave the final meter readings, either i, or they, got two of them mixed up, quite how this did not manifest itself immediately i do not know), only now the tenants that replaced us are moving out have they got another meter reading that has dramatically different values for two of the readings, they figured that during my meter readings two of them got mixed up, and so are now re-billing me for the excess given that they have now changed my old values round to be "correct".
I was hoping for some advice as to what my rights are and how to go about tackling this issue?
Regards

Also given that you have paid the final bill and it is 2 years later does the 1 year back billing rule apply? They should have validated the readings and also what about when the new person moved in, their opening bill would have been wrong.IT Consultant in the utilities industry specialising in the retail electricity market.
